Casting Call Fashion 101:
What to wear/what to avoid?

What to wear:

DO look your best, though you don't have to go as far as wearing your Sunday's best. You can dress up a little by wearing a favourite shirt, pair of pants, or skirt, but don't go overboard! Stick to simple, and solid coloured outfits. Remember, casting agents want to see what you look like, not to be distracted by your outfit.

DO come to the casting call with clean, and neat hair. Don't forget to brush your hair! A casting call hair faux pas! For women, wearing your hair up or down is up to you. Just remember to use good judgment. For men, a clean-shaven look is your best bet unless otherwise requested by casting agent, and/or agency.

DO opt to go easy on the make up. Men you don't have to worry about this! Simple is your best bet! A suggestion would be a subtle fresh look: moisturizer, concealer, bronzer or blush, mascara, and lip-gloss.

DO wear clean, well-kept, comfortable shoes. If you have a new pair, go for it! Otherwise you can always wear any shoe that is suitable that you might already have. A good-old fashioned loafer is stylish without over-doing it.

Dress appropriately for castings What to avoid:

DON'T be too revealing like you're dressed to go to a club, but also avoid looking too conservative. This is not a church recital. Remember to iron your clothes; you don't want to look like you just rolled out of bed. Also avoid any tracksuits, or any other sporty attire unless specified by casting agent.

DON'T dye your hair any crazy colours, or cut your hair. Casting agents requested you based on a specific look you have. Any abrupt changes in hairstyles might jeopardize your chances of getting the job. Avoid any up-dos, and strange wigs, and/or hairpieces unless specifically requested.

DON'T lather on too much makeup! You're not there to fill a clown position. Avoid dark coloured makeup.

DON'T wear shoes that are broken, dirty, or infested with holes. On the flip side, avoid any footwear that is over the top, and fancy. Also, try to stay away from athletic footwear unless otherwise requested. Don't forget casting calls are like job interviews, the more respectable you look, the more seriously you'll be taken.

I'm now working with an excellent agent at Elite NY who's helping me choose a mother agency and develop my book, and I'm still getting great contacts and opportunities every week. has been invaluable. The team has been in touch giving me really helpful info and advice.
