Struggling Actor? “You’ll Never Make It!”

Are you a struggling actor who gets more discouragement than praises for all the efforts you devote in your craft? Forlorn not. Not a few popular Hollywood actors have pursued showbiz even after they were told to pack up.

What’s remarkable about them is that, despite not being initially “welcomed” in the industry, they remained passionate about acting and went their way to prove that they can make it.

Here are some of them:

1. Lea Michele
The Glee star is anything but unwanted these days. Despite her professional experience in Broadway, talent managers don’t have faith in her looks. “Managers told me you’re not pretty enough. Get a nosejob”, the stunning performer recalls.

2. Salma Hayek
An A-list actress, the Hispanic talent used to be belittled because of her accent. Had it not been for her determination to learn to speak American, she remained a stereotyped Latina maid on films. “People advised me to go back to Mexico, settle down and have kids.”

3. January Jones
It’s bad enough when people you don’t know discouraged you from pursuing your passion. But it’s worse when the words of discouragement came from your boyfriend’s mouth. When the Mad Men siren was just starting her career in Hollywood, her then boyfriend Ashton Kutcher told her “I don’t think you’re going to be good at this”.

4. Adam Pally
Aside from boyfriends, another epic discouragement that a struggling actor could receive may come from an established actor, someone who’s already “up there”. When the Happy Endings actor did an improv with Chevey Chase, the latter bluntly said, “If I were you, I’d quit. It’s not going to happen.”

5. Harrison Ford
The star of Star Wars and Indiana Jones was a part-time carpenter early in his career. Movie executives would tell him he did not have what it takes to be a star. He was helping George Lucas built his home and the latter discovered his acting potential. He landed in Lucas’ Star Wars movie as the iconic Han Solo.

6. Charlie Chaplin
Now a cultural icon, his act was initially rejected by Hollywood studio chiefs. They thought it was bullshit. They thought it would never sell. Fast forward to 2012 and the comedian became known as one of the most creative and influential personalities of the silent-film era.

7 & 8. Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood
These veteran actors were fired after co-starring in the Riverboat television series. “They said I had no talent and Clint’s Adam’s apple was too big,” Burt Reynolds recalls.

9. Lucy Ball
The late actress is best remembered for her starring role in I Love Lucy. But before the thirteen Emmy nominations and four wins and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center Honors, Lucy Ball was but a B-list movie star. Even her drama teachers didn’t see her awesomeness. One month after attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, her mother received a letter from the school saying, “Don’t put any more money into this. This girl will never make it.”

10. Jeanne Moreau
At 21, the French acting legend was told by acting director that her head was too crooked and she wasn’t beautiful and photogenic enough to make it in films. Instead of giving up, she just said to herself “Alright then, I guess I will have to make it my own way.” In 1997, the legendary actress received the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, after making about 100 films… in her own way.

You will make it in Hollywood.

Industry Word of the Day: Hippy

No, this one isn’t talking about political activism and cannabis.

In the modeling world, a hippy is a woman with hips deemed too wide that it violates an agency’s rule on maintaining a certain hip measurement.

Ex: Holland’s Next Top Model Season 4 winner Ananda Marchildon is fired by Elite Models for being too hippy. Her hips, which measure 92cm, violated Elite’s alleged “rule” that their models maintain a 90cm measurement or less.

CFDA Guidelines for Fashion Week

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, through the initiative of its chairperson Diane Von Furstenberg, has released a guideline for designers and models participating in US fashion shows, especially in the upcoming New York Fashion Week.

Top of of the list is, of course, that models must be 16 and above. To prove their qualifying age, models are required to show their IDs on the day of the show. Designers are also instructed not to allow models under the age of 18 to work past midnight at fittings.

The CFDA chair says that designers have the responsibility to set a strong example of health and well-balanced life on the runways. Aside from age, health is also a very important consideration. Although many of the models are genetically thin, not a few have develop eating disorders from coping with the size 0 standard. Designers actually have the power to curtail anorexia in the industry by banning girls with eating disorder problems.

CFDA’s Guidelines:

• Educate the industry to identify the early warning signs in an individual at risk of developing an eating disorder.

• Encourage models who may have an eating disorder to seek professional help in order to continue modeling. And models who are receiving professional help for an eating disorder should not continue modeling without that professional’s approval.

• Develop workshops for the industry (including models and their families) on the nature of eating disorders, how they arise, how we identify and treat them, and complications if they are untreated.

• Support the well-being of younger individuals by not hiring models under the age of sixteen for runway shows; not allowing models under the age of eighteen to work past midnight at fittings or shoots; checking IDs to ensure that models are the appropriate age; providing regular breaks and rest.

• Consult the applicable labor laws found at www.labor.state.ny.us when working with models under sixteen.

• Supply healthy meals, snacks, and water backstage and at shoots and provide nutrition and fitness education.

• Promote a healthy backstage environment by raising the awareness of the impact of smoking and tobacco-related disease among women, ensuring a smoke-free environment, and address underage drinking by prohibiting alcohol.

Sue Swank Relates More To Models As A Female Photographer

These days, reports of top photographers sexually assaulting young female models have become so common that models start to get wary of working with male photographers. Although it is dumb to say that the risk of getting raped or harassed is higher when working with male photographers, not a few women have favored female photographers to avoid such troubles.

Aside from the common impression that posing with a female photographer is a lot more comfortable especially for amateur models, another assumed advantage of female photographer-female model collaboration is relatability.

Photographer Sue M. Swank sees her being a woman as an advantage to her profession. She can relate well to her models, who are mostly females:

“Being a woman in the field of professional photography I feel gives me an edge when working with models and clients, because I can relate to the strength, as well as the vulnerability on both sides and strive hard to create a stunning result that has lasting results.”

Sue Swank owns the one-person photography studio Swank Photography that is based in the fabulous Florida Keys. She has been running her studio for 6 years but she’s been a professional photographer for a little over 10 years already.

Sue Swank is agency-represented, but she also maintains a photographer portfolio here at New Faces® in order to better reach out to thousands of models with various expertise — from fashion, portraits, boudior, wildlife, etcetera.

Casting Call For Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Video

How ’bout some grunge nostalgia? Here’s the casting call poster for Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video:

Who would have thought that a group of dirrrrty-looking, highschoolish punks, nerds, and jocks in the background would help make the music video become one of the best and most influential music videos of all time?

Here are lesser known facts about the making of the music video. It was reported that the Extras who came to the shoot and filled the bleachers were forced to stay seated through numerous replays of the song for an entire afternoon of filming. The great Kurt Cobain had this weird idea of allowing the young extras to mosh so that the scene would look like a real riot scene. “Once the kids came out dancing they just said ‘fuck you,’ because they were so tired of this shit throughout the day,” said him.

Ah, nothing makes a great music video than a background of passionate wasted Extras.

Have you experienced becoming an extra for your favorite band? Your favorite actors? Imagine rubbing shoulders with the most popular celebrities like Kurt Cobain! (He’s long dead alright, hence, “imagine”.) Become a movie or TV extras today!

And The 2011 Women’s Top Face Of The Year Is… Panda!

Female Politicians? No, they’re just a bunch of wonder-woman-wannabees. Female CEOs? Boring. Hollywood’s Hottest Actresses? Sexy but senseless. Sportswomen? Nah-uh. Journalists? Not quiet. Fashion experts, perhaps? Hell no!

This year’s most newsworthy female, or so it will become, is a cuddly mamma with two black eyes — panda!

BBC News has recently announced its top twelve faces for 2011 in the men and women’s categories. While 12 of the human males managed to get into the list, only 11 female human beings made the cut. The remaining spot was reserved for Tian Tian, a female panda famous for her nickname Sweetie. And voila! Sweetie The Panda eventually won the title as this year’s top face of women.

And where there is ego-tripping and sexism, controversy follows. Lots of media outlets and women’s groups (apparently) have called on BBC News to replace the panda with a newsworthy human being. However, the company has remained unmoved by the social media outrage, pointing out that a male pig was also on its 2009 male list yet people made no qualms about it.

Women’s history of discrimination and struggle for human rights, ring a bell? HELLO?!

“Whilst we all love a good panda story, in a year when Christine Lagarde became head of the IMF, or Helle Thorning-Schmidt became prime minister of Denmark or even the sad death of Amy Winehouse, it’s frustrating the BBC couldn’t think of 12 human female faces who have made the news this year,” says Labor Member of Parliament Stella Creasy who also believes that BBC had a long way to go when it comes to representing women.

Nikh Fellouris Is One F!erce Model

Standing tall at 5′9″, Nikh Fellouris is not your typical pale and lanky model. Her Mediterranean look is due to her Northern Chinese and Greek ethnicity, while her muscular and slim physique is carved by her trainings in dance and martial arts.

At 33, Nikh Fellouris is already a veteran in the world of fashion, commercial, and artistic modeling. She has been a runway model for Macy’s and various other boutiques throughout Southern California and New York. She’s also a frequently used subject piece for photographer Michael Harrington, while her pose for Peter Alexander has been on display at the Museum for Contemporary Arts in Los Angeles.

A striking and gorgeous brunette, Nikh Fellouris presents herself as a very kind and humorous person.

But hold it, jerks. This beautiful lady is unfortunately not the kind of girl to mess with. Aside from being serious and competitive around her working environment, Nikh Fellouris also holds a second degree black belt in Kempo Karate-Do; with training in Wing Chun; Tai Chi and traditional Japanese, Filipino, and Chinese weapons.
