Jennifer Hawkins, Naked And Unretouched On Marie Claire

Supermodel Jennifer Hawkins poses naked and unretouched on the cover of Marie Claire Australia. The magazine's February issue supports the campaign against photo retouching and helps promote positive body image.

Wearing nothing but make-up, the 26-year-old Aussie strips for the pictorial and exposes her flaws, including a slightly dimpled thigh and a tiny crease on her waist.

The supermodel's unretouched magazine cover is for the benefit of Butterfly Foundation, an organization that provides support to Australians who are struggling with eating disorders and body-image issues and their careers.

Considering that Jennifer Hawkins is still a supermodel despite her "flaws," critics ask why the foundation did not put forward a more average Australian woman if they are really serious on positive body image awareness campaign.

In defend of the supermodel's unretouched nude cover, Butterfly Foundation's General Manager Julie Parker says that magazines have already tried that tactic in the past but to no avail. She explains:

"The thing is unfortunately it doesn't make the same point, because Jennifer sells magazines and she creates awareness. If Marie Claire had chosen to put on their cover an ordinary women, say myself or a friend of yours, it would not have created the awareness it does."

And while a naked and unretouched Jennifer Hawkins on magazine cover helps attract buyers and eventually bring awareness to the issue of photo retouching, it remains a "one small part of the much wider spectrum of body image, self esteem and eating disorder issues."

Despite that the magazine could not address the skinny-versus-plus size issue in modeling, the foundation is still hopeful to help push magazines into including more natural images.

Jennifer Hawkins, for her part, says:

"I'm not a stick figure - I thought it would be great to tell women to just be themselves and be confident."

The supermodel's nude and unretouched photo cover on the February issue of Marie Claire magazine is on sale from January 6.

UK Bans Twiggy's Photoshopped Olay Ads

U.K's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has finally banned Twiggy ads for Olay, following hundreds of complains from concerned groups who claimed that the images of the wrinkle-free model is socially irresponsible and could have a negative impact on people's perceptions of their own body image.

Beauty company Olay debuted its Definity eye illuminator campaign last summer, featuring then 59 year-old Twiggy. Not to mention that the airbrushing has definitely made the old model's face look younger-smoother-firmer, her eyes were also bright and youthful without the evident of many crows feet.

Below Twiggy's photoshopped face was the line "Olay is my secret to brighter-looking eyes."

Because the anti-aging cream has older women as its target market, some people were disturbed including British lawmakers who called for the banning of the digitally altered advertisements since August.

Olay has admitted to "minor retouching" around Twiggy's eyelid area but the ads made it look like the result of the model's constant wiping of the eye cream.

The ASA banned the complete set of Twiggy's Olay ads yesterday, ruling that the post-production retouching could give consumers a "misleading impression of the effect the product could achieve."

Demi Moore's Head, Anja Rubik's Body?

It is not an unusual occurrence. Famous Hollywood celebrities often lend their heads to be put on top of models' bodies for advertisements. How? Photoshop!

And now both "Conspiracy Theorists" and Photoshop fanatics are suggesting that the December cover of W magazine has Photoshopped the photo of 46 year-old Demi Moore by putting her head onto the gorgeous body of 26 year-old model Anja Rubik from a runway shot in the spring 2010 Balmain show in Paris.

Apparently, the forensic analysis of Demi Moore's photo on the magazine cover has devolved. Earlier, it was her hip that has been the subject of crucial scrutiny. Forget that the actress appears undeniably thin, there is also a supposed "chunk" missing from her left hip. Both Demi Moore and W magazine have denied the allegation.

In fairness to Demi Moore, she has really posed for W. There is a gallery of photos from the same magazine pictorial and it is proving the actress' slim and toned body. On the other hand, what has really taken place during the final retouching remains a mystery.

Ultra-Thin Model Of Ralph Lauren Ad Sparks Uproar

Here's the latest image to spark uproar in the old brewing debate of using digitally altered photographs of models in advertising and fashion magazines:

a Ralph Lauren advertisement featuring Filippa Hamilton in all her ultra-thin glory.

The photo first appeared on a blog called Photoshop Disasters, with a comment that says, "Dude, her head's bigger than her pelvis." It attracted much publicity after being posted by Boing Boing later on its website.

The Ralph Lauren management was none too pleased over the controversy the posts have sparked so they filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint over the two companies. According to the management, the "use of the image was a copyright infringement that fell outside of the Fair Use laws which allow the media to reproduce creative content for the purposes of commentary and criticism."

As a response, Photoshop Disasters removed the post. But Boing Boing, Canada's Priority Colo, refused to do so. Instead, it posted a warning for Ralph Lauren on its website that says:

"Copyright law doesn't give you the right to threaten your critics for pointing out the problems with your offerings. You should know better. And every time you threaten to sue us over stuff like this, we will:

a) Reproduce the original criticism, making damned sure that all our readers get a good, long look at it, and;

b) Publish your spurious legal threat along with copious mockery, so that it becomes highly ranked in search engines where other people you threaten can find it and take heart; and

c) Offer nourishing soup and sandwiches to your models."

Ralph Lauren's attempt to put a stop to the critics apparently did not help. It only increased the negative attention surrounding the controversial ad.

Actually, the problem is not on the useful digital photo enhancement process. If only Ralph Lauren did not alter the model so thin that her waist appears smaller than her head...
