About The Play:
Denzel Washington will return the New York stage next spring in a revival of August Wilson's award-winning production Fences. The two-time Oscar winner has been cast as patriarch Troy Maxson.
SEEKING:
1.) FEMALE (40s; African-American) - ROSE. Troy's wife of 18 years. Loyal and kind-hearted, with a deep-rooted strength. A devoted and equal partner to Troy, she balances their relationship with a humor and lightness that keeps her grounded;
2.) MALE (17-27; African-American) - CORY. Troy and Rose's only child together. At the play's onset, Cory is a typical teen with a messy room and a passion and talent for football. Has dreams bigger than the city of Pittsburgh, bigger than his father will allow. Struggling in his life to step out from beneath his father's formidable shadow;
3.) MALE (50s; African-American) - JIM BONO. Troy's friend, co-worker and confidant; they met in jail together. Loyal and trustworthy, he strives to be an honest, hardworking man who can provide for his wife. Where Troy strives to sit at the front on the bus, Jim is just fine sitting in the back;
4.) MALE (40-50; African-American) - GABRIEL. Troy's younger and only brother. After suffering a head injury fighting in World War II, he believes he is the Archangel Gabriel, waiting for the judgment day. Has moments of clarity in which he is aware of his reliance on Troy, and he struggles for the independence he fears he will never have;
5.) MALE (mid-late 30s; African-American) - LYONS. Troy's son from a previous marriage. Struggling jazz musician, constantly searching for what fulfills him. Smooth and charming, he fancies himself a free-wheeling man of the world, albeit one who always seems to be in need of money from his father;
6.) FEMALE CHILD (around 7 years old; African-American) - RAYNELL. Troy's daughter (out of wedlock), being raised by Rose. Precocious and inquisitive;
7.) MALE (early 50s; African-American) - TROY (UNDERSTUDY). Ex-star baseball player, now raising a family and driving a garbage truck. Struggles to balance the things he feels he owes his wife and children with the things he feels he owes himself. Honest, hardworking and the definition of strong-willed.
