Florida Studio Theatre, Richard Hopkins Artistic Director, is seeking submissions of strong actors for the following show/roles in the 2009-10 Winter Mainstage Season: RUINED by Lynne Nottage.
Synopsis:
RUINED is glimpse into the Democratic Republic of Congo during a decade of civil unrest. Mama Nadi, owner of a canteen, serves up everything from a cold beer and a warm meal to the company of a woman. The women overcome adversity of war through hope, love and survival. Winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize.

SEEKING:
1.) FEMALE (40s; African-American) - MAMA NADI. A shrewd business woman in her early 40s, tough, with an arrogant stride and majestic air;
2.) MALE (40s; African-American) - CHRISTIAN. A perpetually cheerful traveling salesman. His good looks have been worn down by hard living on the road. Has romantic designs on Mama Nadi;
3.) FEMALE (20s; African-American) - SOPHIE. 18, a luminous beauty with an air of defiance, proud, educated "Ruined" by a militia in the Congolese civil war. NOTE: Even though the character is 18, the casting is for an actress in her 20s;
4.) FEMALE (20s; African-American) - SALIMA. A sturdy peasant woman whose face betrays a world weariness. She was raped and taken from her home by a group of Congolese soldiers;
5.) FEMALE (20s; African-American) - JOSEPHINE. A sexy woman in Mama Nadi's canteen who provides frequent male companionship. Proud, combative and aggressively sensual;
6.) MALE (40s-50s; Middle-Eastern) - MR. HARARI. A Lebanese diamond merchant, canny business man. A frequent visitor to Mama Nadi's and Josephine;
7.) MALE (30s-40s; African-American) - JEROME KISEMBE. The rebel leader. Also plays a soldier in the government army;
8.) MALE (30s-40s; African-American) - OSEMBENGA. A pompous man, commander of the government army. Also plays a soldier in the rebel militia;
9.) MALE (early 30s; African-American) - FORTUNE. A worn and ragged soldier of Commander Osembenga. He is Salima's husband and has come to Mama Nadi's to take her back. Also plays a rebel soldier and a miner;
10.) MALE (late 20s; African-American) - SIMON. Fortune's friend, also a worn and ragged soldier of Osembenga. Also plays a rebel soldier, a miner and an aid worker;
11.) MALE (20s; African-American) - PASCAL. A government soldier. Also plays a rebel soldier

The company is seeking very strong actors with significant professional experience for this very demanding show.
