Casting Males Actors For Serio-Comedy Play "Take Me Out"

The Heights Players is casting performers for "Take Me Out," a hypothetical serio-comedy, explores with wit and compassion what might happen if a player on a major league baseball team were to announce that he is gay.

The play is full of insights about baseball, masculinity, and identity in the twenty-first century, told with humor, and ending in tragedy. Performance dates are Friday & Saturday at 8PM, Sundays at 2PM from January 8th through the 24th, 2010, with brush-up rehearsals on Thursdays January 14th & 21st 2010.

This is a Non-Equity, non-paying production.

SEEKING:

1.) MALE (20-35; Caucasian) - KIPPY SUNDERSTORM. Darren's closest friend on the team, Kippy has a reputation as the most intelligent man in baseball and serves as the author's spokesman in ruminating about the sociopolitical impact of Darren's coming out. Strong actor required. (Nudity required for this role);

2.) MALE (20-30; mixed ethnicity) - DARREN LEMMING. The play's central character and the star center fielder of the Empires. He is young, rich, famous, talented, handsome and so convinced of his popularity that when he casually announces that he's gay, he assumes the news will be readily accepted by everyone. He is biracial, with a white father and a black mother, and is extremely intelligent and very self confident, almost conceited. Strong actor required. (Adult Situations & Nudity required for this role);

3.) MALE (20-35; Caucasian) - SHANE MUNGITT. Brought in from the minors to be a pitcher for the Empires. Shane's skill is tied to certain psychological problems carried over from childhood. The only thing that he ever learned to do well is pitch. He has poor communication skills and refers to his teammates with derogatory slurs. He is a mysterious, almost simple guy that must be able to ignorantly deliver offensive dialogue. (Adult Situations & Nudity required for this role);

4.) MALE (35-55; Caucasian) - SKIPPER/WILLIAM R. DANZIGER. The manager of the Empires. Known for his personal skills, ability to be tough when he needs to be and gentle when it is called for. After Darren publicly announces that he is gay, Skipper writes him a formal letter, expressing both his support and frustration. He is the paternal character of the show;

5.) MALE (18-30; Caucasian) - JASON CHENIER. A catcher who has been with the Empires for three weeks. He has been too shy to talk to the star player, but after Darren announces that he is gay, Jason feels that he can approach him. He should be somewhat younger and more naïve than his teammates. (Nudity required for this role);

6.) MALE (20-35; African-American) DAVEY BATTLE. Darren's best friend and the star player for a rival team. Darren chides Davey for his middle-class religious values: his happy marriage, his three children, etc. Davey encourages Darren to keep no secrets, which leads to Darren's announcement about his sexual orientation;

7.) MALE (30-55; any ethnicity) - MASON MARZAC. An investment counselor who is assigned to handle Darren money. He is socially challenged and a brilliant but repressed guy, who, despite everyone around him, blooms in the ecstatic discovery of baseball. He isn't campy or noticeably swishy, but he is, from the start, distinctly gay. An outgoing, larger-than-life comedic actor is required for this role;

8.) MALE (20-35; Caucasian) - TODDY KOOVITZ. TA member of the Empires, becomes belligerent after the announcement that Darren is gay. He feels uncomfortable with Darren and resents this fact. He is also an illiterate man, given to pronouncing words incorrectly, and has machismo ignorance about him. (Nudity required for this role);

9.) MALE (20-35; Latino) - RODRIGUEZ. Never onstage without the other Spanish-speaking member of the Empires, Martinez. Their conversations together are a mystery to the other team members. Must speak fluent Spanish with an appropriate accent and have expressive, comedic skills. Physical humor encouraged. (Nudity required for this role);

10. MALE (20-35; Latino) - MARTINEZ. See description for Rodriguez. (Nudity required for this role);

11.) MALE (20-35; Asian/Asian-American) - TAKESHI KAWABATA. Japanese star pitcher for the Empires. His Japanese is translated into English, giving his words meanings that fit an Asian stereotype. He later speaks to the audience in imperfect English revealing his awareness of his surroundings and willfully ignoring it. Familiarity with Japanese preferred. (Nudity required for this role)
