Blinded by jealousy and rage, Jake believes he may have murdered his wife. While seeking refuge in the home of his abusively unstable mother, his brother Frankie goes to investigate and finds himself caught in the confusing currents of revenge and longing.

"A Lie of the Mind" opened at the Promenade Theater in 1985 and won the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards for Best New Play. Hawke received accolades in 2007 for directing Jonathan Marc Sherman's Things We Want with The New Group.

SYNOPSIS:
Jake beat his wife Beth in a jealous rage, and is now afraid he might have killed her. While Jake hides out with their abusive mother, his brother Frankie goes off in hopes of finding Beth alive. Finding the brain-damaged Beth in the outback pining for Jake, Frankie ends up helplessly marooned in her family's home during a blizzard. Meanwhile, Jake and his sister Sally piece together the dark history of their family, which his mother is ready to put behind them once and for all.

SEEKING:

1.) MALE (early 30s-mid 40s; any ethnicity) - JAKE. Hot-tempered, jealous and obsessed with his wife Beth. Heavy drinker. Prone to violence. Currently feverish and weak from love-sickness;

2.) MALE (mid 20s-early 40s; any ethnicity) - FRANKIE. Jake's younger brother, and his counterpoint. Level-headed; a peace-maker and a problem solver. Devoted to Jake, but tortured by his messed-up family. Smitten by Beth;

3.) FEMALE (late 20s-late 30s; any ethnicity) - BETH. Married to Jake. An actress. Has been beaten by Jake, and has brain damage that affects her speech. Uncensored and expressive; often overwhelmed with emotion;

4.) MALE (mid 30s-mid 40s; any ethnicity) - MIKE. Beth's brother. Defensive, impatient, angry. Blunt, no-nonsense and responsible. Used to taking care of his family, and fiercely protective of his sister;

5.) FEMALE (late 50s-60s; any ethnicity) - LORRAINE. Mother of Jake, Frankie and Sally. Spiteful and bitter. Maternal and possessive with her sons, but sharp with her daughter, whom she blames for her alcoholic husband's death
