The Hippodrome State Theatre (Gainesville, FL) is casting its 2008-09 season. Season includes: A Tuna Christmas, about the wacky characters from Tuna, TX who have once again entered the heated Yuletide lawn display contest (Jaston Williams, Joe Sears & Ed Howard, writers; Mary Hausch, dir. Rehearsals begin Nov. 7; runs Nov. 28-Dec. 21); A Christmas Carol, adapted from Charles Dickens (Mary Hausch, adaptation. Rehearsals begin Nov. 7; runs Nov. 29-Dec. 21); The Glass Menagerie (Tenessee Williams, writer. Rehearsals begin Dec. 16; runs Jan. 9-Feb. 1); Eurydice, in which the myth of Orpheus is reinvented through the eyes of its heroine, Eurydice (Sarah Ruhl, writer. Rehearsals begin Feb. 6; runs Feb. 27-March 22); Shipwrecked, based on the true story of fabulist Louis de Rougement in which a young man washes up on an uncharted tropical island where he rescues an aborigine who becomes his wife (Donald Margulies, writer. Rehearsals begin March 27; runs April 17-May 10); and The Great American Trailer Park Musical, about a new tenant at Armadillo Acres wreaking havoc all over Florida’s most exclusive trailer park (David Nehls, music & lyrics. Rehearsals begin May 15; opens June 5 for an open summer run). Lauren Caldwell, artistic dir. (at auditions).

A Tuna Christmas —

FEMALE or MALE (30s to 50s) - TWO ACTORS. Will play multiple characters in a small Texas town, including Sheriff, housewife, child, teenager, socialite, Tastee Crème waitresses, Humane Society worker, radio DJs, etc


A Christmas Carol —

MALE (30 to 40) - BOB CRATCHIT. Hardworking employee of Ebenezer Scrooge, devoted father and husband;

FEMALE (30 to 40) - MRS. CRATCHIT. Devoted wife and mother, married to Bob Cratchit;

FEMALE or MALE (30 to 60) - SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS PAST. The first ghostly visitor to Ebenezer Scrooge, gentle but spirited;

FEMALE or MALE (30 to 60) - SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT. Scrooge’s second ghostly visitor, jolly but forceful;

MALE (30 to 50) - JACOB MARLEY. Ebenezer’s former business partner, now the ghostly narrator of the story.

Note: The following role is cast; auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements—EBENEZER SCROOGE.


The Glass Menagerie —

FEMALE (50s) - AMANDA WINGFIELD. Matriarch of the Wingfield household;

FEMALE (20s) - LAURA WINGFIELD. Amanda’s fragile daughter;

MALE (20 to 30) - TOM WINGFIELD. Amanda’s independent son, Laura’s brother, also serves as the narrator;

MALE (20 to 30) - JIM O'CONNOR. The gentleman caller, Tom arranges for him to meet Laura.


Eurydice —

FEMALE (20s) - EURYDICE. Young woman sent to the underworld on her wedding day;

MALE (50s) - HER FATHER. Inhabitant of the underworld, happy to be reunited with Eurydice;

MALE (20s) - ORPHEUS. Husband to Eurydice, strong, fit, also a gifted musician;

MALE (30s to 40s) - A NASTY INTERESTING MAN/LORD OF THE UNDERWORLD. Represents Hades;

MALES (30s to 50s) - BIG STONE, LITTLE STONE, and LOUD STONE. Three outspoken inhabitants of the underworld.


Shipwrecked —

MALE (30s to 50s) - LOUIS DE ROUGEMONT. Eccentric, seasoned traveler;

FEMALE or MALE (20s to 40s) - TWO ACTORS. To play multiple characters from de Rougemont’s story.


Trailer Park Musical —

FEMALE (40s to 50s) - BETTY. One of three “bottle blonde narrators,” tough, has seen it all, G below middle C to second E above middle C;

FEMALE (20s to 30s) - LIN. Another of the three “bottle blonde narrators,” her husband is in prison, strong, blunt, G below middle C to second G above middle C;

FEMALE (mid to late 20s) - PICKLES. Youngest of the “bottle blonde narrators,” vulnerable, witty, G below middle C to second G above middle C;

FEMALE (20s) - PIPPI. Stripper/erotic dancer, bold newcomer, strong belt, must move well, G below middle C to second A above middle C;

FEMALE (30s to 40s) - JEANNIE. Average housewife, agoraphobic, married to Norbert, G below middle C to second E above middle C;

MALE (30s to 40s) - NORBERT. Jeannie’s husband, toll collector, good ol’ boy, second A below middle C to G above middle C;

MALE (20s) - Pippi’s ex-boyfriend, Norbert and Jeannie’s son, wild young redneck, second B below middle C to A above middle C.
