MCC Theater “Playlab” (producer) is casting readings of Second Life (Ashlin Halfnight, writer. Reading performs Oct. 27) and Zero (Julian Shepard, writer. Reading performs Nov. 3). Second Life —

FEMALE (mid-20s) - KAT. Left an abusive boyfriend and rural New York to come to the city and “live the dream,” is bartending and in business school, but mostly getting wasted with her drug-dealer boyfriend and his friends, a little crude and brazen, but sweet and sincere;

MALE (early 20s) - TIM. Incredibly awkward and anti-social, immersed in porn and video games, has a real problem telling what’s proper or not, to the point of being pathological, sweet but dangerous;

MALE (mid-20s) - CALVIN. Tim’s cousin and roommate, wants Tim to be okay but also just wants to be able to enjoy his life, illustrates children’s books, level-headed, sincere;

MALE (mid-20s) - WOOD. Calvin’s drug dealer and friend, casual, crass, not much intellectual depth but lots of energy, funny, sarcastic



Zero —

FEMALE (late teens) - EMILY. 18, high school senior, headed for the Army after graduation, smart girl next door, wants to experience the world;

MALE (late teens) - TYLER. 18, young man, in love with Emily, wants to convince her to be more than friends, earnest, passionate, emotional, a bit naive;

MALES (early 20s) - BROWN and KELLOGG. Injured soldiers, currently in rehab, nostalgic for home but afraid of how they’ll be received with their disabilities, love to joke and play games, amiable and jocular;

FEMALE (mid to late 20s) - DORA. Stunning, a bit desperate, doesn’t know what to bank on besides her beauty, calculating, but kind at heart;

MALE (late 20s) - CLIFF. Club manager, frustrated, resentful, jealous, quick to anger, decisive, sad;

MALE (early 30s) - HUDSON. Photographer who hasn’t been able to take a picture in years, charming when he wants to be, ingratiating, yet a bit dangerous, at the end of his rope;

MALE (late 20s) - AVI. Israeli, real estate broker, high-strung, highly ambitious, fast-talking, self-confident.
