Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA) is casting its 2009 season. Season dramas include: Rock ‘N’ Roll (Tom Stoppard, writer; Andrew S. Paul, dir. Rehearsals begin April 14; runs May 7-30), What the Butler Saw (Joe Orton, writer. Rehearsals begin May 19; runs June 11-27), Doubt (John Patrick Shanley, writer; Jeffrey M. Cordell, dir. Rehearsals begin June 16; runs July 9-Aug. 1), The History Boys (Alan Bennett, writer; Andrew S. Paul, dir. Rehearsals begin July 7; runs Aug. 6-22), and Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoevsky, writer; Marilyn Campbell & Curt Columbus, adaptation. Rehearsals begin Aug. 18; runs Sept. 9-26). Andrew S. Paul, artistic dir. (at auditions). All rehearsal and performance dates are in 2009.

Rock ‘N’ Roll —

MALE (25 to 35) - THE PIPER/POLICEMAN 1/STEPHEN. The Piper, mysterious young man who appears briefly in a few scenes, Policeman 1, member of the secret police, character has one line, Stephen, Alice’s boyfriend, a young Communist, doesn’t allow Max to bully him;

FEMALE (21 to 30) - ESME (Younger)/ALICE. Esme, daughter of Eleanor and Max, 1960s flower child, Alice, Esme’s daughter;

MALE (30 to 40) - JAN. Czechoslovakian Communist who spends some time in England as a university lecturer, returns to Czechoslovakia and works briefly as a journalist, but is forced out of the job and into work in a kitchen for his outspoken political beliefs, a huge music fan;

MALE (50 to 65) - MAX. University professor, older than Jan and in some ways a father figure to him, well-known British Marxist philosopher, outspoken, opinionated, can be something of a bully;

FEMALE (40 to 50) - ELEANOR/ESME (Older). Eleanor, Max’s wife, a professor, dying of breast cancer, smart, independent, outspoken, Esme, grown-up daughter of Max and Eleanor;

FEMALE (25 to 35) - GILLIAN/MAGDA/PUPIL. Gillian, one of Eleanor’s students, eager, desperate to please and make her mark, intimidated by Eleanor, Magda, Jan’s girlfriend, later becomes Ferdinand’s girlfriend, young Czech woman, Pupil, Lenka’s student;

MALE (30 to 45) - INTERROGATOR/NIGEL. Interrogator, bureaucrat for the Ministry of the Interior in Prague, Nigel, reporter, married to (and later divorced from) Esme, Alice’s father, married to Candida later in the play;

MALE (30 to 40) - FERDINAND. Friend of Jan, huge music fan and political activist;

MALE (35 to 55) - MILAN/POLICEMAN 2. Milan, Czech Communist policeman who works his way up the ladder, takes information from informants, Policeman 2, member of the secret police;

FEMALE (late 20s) - LENKA. One of Eleanor’s pupils of classical studies, assertive Czech woman, self-assured enough to debate Eleanor, fond of Max;

FEMALE (30 to 45) - CANDIDA. Incendiary gossip columnist, married to Nigel. Note: Eight Equity actor contracts available


What the Butler Saw —

MALE (40 to 55) - DR. PRENTICE. Lecherous psychiatrist, trying to cover up an attempted seduction;

FEMALE (21 to 28) - GERALDINE BARCLAY. Dr. Prentice’s prospective secretary, somewhat naive, pretty young woman;

FEMALE (35 to 50) - MRS. PRENTICE. The doctor’s wife, domineering and totally in control, browbeats Dr. Prentice but has secrets of her own to hide;

MALE (21 to 28) - NICHOLAS BECKETT. Enterprising hotel page boy, blackmails Mrs. Prentice, offering to give her negatives of indiscreet photographs in exchange for the job of secretary to Dr. Prentice;

MALE (50 to 65) - DR. RANCE. Officious government official sent to inspect Dr. Prentice’s mental health facility;

MALE (35 to 50) - SERGEANT MATCH. Police officer who arrives at the institution to question Nicholas about alleged misconduct with a group of schoolchildren and Geraldine Barclay about a certain portion of Winston Churchill’s anatomy that he believes she may have received from her stepmother and may be hiding

Doubt —

FEMALE (50s to 60s) - SISTER ALOYSIUS BEAUVIER. Suspicious, jaded nun who is determined to “out” Father Flynn, intelligent, strong-willed, determined, not interested in seeing secular progress interfere with religious society;

FEMALE (20s) - SISTER JAMES. Young, naive nun, optimistic, sunny;

FEMALE (approximately 38; African-American) - MRS. MULLER. Her son may have been molested by Father Flynn

MALE (late 30s) - FATHER BRENDAN FLYNN. Affable young priest who cares about his students, may or may not have behaved inappropriately, more in touch with the members of his church and secular society than Sister Aloysius is

The History Boys —

MALE (28 to 35) - IRWIN. Attractive teacher, a little insecure about his teaching ability, not much older than the students he is teaching, has been hired to teach the students to take what they know and “spin” it to impress the deans of Oxford and Cambridge, believes that history can be manipulated to defend or dispute any argument, and that it’s not about the facts but the polish and uniqueness with which they are presented;

MALE (50 to 65) - HECTOR. Old-school English teacher who believes in knowledge for the sake of knowledge, has a close relationship with his students who respect and care about him;

MALE (45 to 65) - HEADMASTER. Not well-liked by the teachers, an authoritarian figure who is more focused on results and statistics than on what is best for the students as individuals;

FEMALE (45 to 65) - MRS. LINTOTT (DOROTHY). The only female teacher in the school, liked by the students and by her fellow teachers, doesn’t have a flashy teaching style but is a solid teacher, doesn’t mince words;

MALE (30 to 45) - DIRECTOR. Director of the BBC history documentary on which Irwin is working;

MALE (16 to 17) - POSNER. Jewish, student, younger-looking and less developed than the rest of the boys, in love with Dakin, also a good singer;

MALE (16 to 17) - DAKIN. The most charismatic and mature of the boys, the “leader” the other boys (and even the teachers) look up to and emulate, aware of his power and only occasionally uses it to manipulate;

MALE (16 to 17) - SCRIPPS. Has a strong belief in God, wants to be a writer, often serves as narrator, also must be a good piano player;

MALE (16 to 17) - RUDGE. The athlete of the group, considered to have less academic potential than the others;

MALES (16 to 17) - LOCKWOOD, AKTHAR, TIMMS, and CROWTHER. Other students.

Crime and Punishment —

MALE (28 to 35) - RASKOLNIKOV. Poor, murders a pawnbroker and her sister, his philosophical beliefs allow him to convince himself that he had an obligation to society to murder the woman, and is therefore above (or at least outside) the law;

MALE (45 to 60) - PORFIRY/OTHERS. The detective investigating the murder case, intelligent, always calm and polite, actor also plays a few other small roles;

FEMALE (25 to 35) - SONIA/OTHERS. Prostitute who befriends Raskolnikov, kind-hearted, pragmatic, actress also plays a few other small roles
